My work is initiated by a desire to explore. Family history, repressed memories,
behavior, role modeling, patterning, and pressure from expectations
are some of the various themes I investigate in Relative. Viewing
photographs as sometimes polished presentations of personalities
and events on the surface; I find resonate truths in the deeper
subtleties of details.
The objects and stories accompanying family photographs reinforce
many of my perceptions. As I sift through images of my grandmother’s,
mother’s, and my life I am flooded with layers of emotions
and memories that the images evoke. Correlations become apparent
as patterns arise and I recall different phases in my life. This
leads me to question my grandmother and mother’s experiences
at similar ages. Through conversations with my mother that the photographs
prompt, I find that, like myself, she and my grandmother struggle
or have struggled with feelings of isolation induced by fluxuating
confidence in identity. This process of analysis gives me a deeper
appreciation for the multi-dimensional personalities that they and
I often feel forced to hide behind a smile. This installation and
performance becomes an homage for remembrance of their care and
influence as my role models, as well as a visual representation
of the cycle of emotions I experience.
